Is Springtime the Perfect Season for Your Engagement Photos?

Are you wondering when you should book that once-in-a-lifetime engagement session? I have examples of engagement photography in Springtime to showcase the best parts of this season! Springtime photo shoots are gentle colors, unpredictable rains, and still chilly temperatures – in Michigan, anyway.

Think cherry trees in bloom, fields of sunny daffodils, and the striking pastel tones of Eastern redbuds and pink magnolias. We will navigate the capricious weather of late April and early to mid-May. Is it worth it? YES! I’m writing this in February, and longing for spring photo sessions right now! It is such a hopeful, happy time! Three reasons to put it high on the “yes” list include: if you love flowers more than you love golden hour light, if your wedding is THIS summer or fall; and if you are getting married the following spring. I’ll nuance through why after these examples of springtime photo shoots from past sessions!

As promised – my thoughts. Here are three reasons why spring might be the best time for your engagement session photos!

You Love Flowers More Than Golden Hour

As shown above, every once in a while I happen upon a lovely sunset in spring, but they are by no means guaranteed. Engagement photography in springtime means spring rains and cold cloud cover are still much more common than the sun. This happy trade protects those delicate florals though. When the real mid-day heat waves arrive the prettiest blooms are gone until next year. So, to plan for spring, pick clothes that can tolerate damp ground, hairstyles that don’t mind a little wind, and don’t be afraid of the morning rain showers. They are the reason the flowers are still there for us!

Your Wedding Is This Summer or Fall

Assuming you haven’t done an engagement session yet and your wedding is this summer or fall, it’s time to jump in with both feet! You’ll want those images to build a wedding website, use for invites, display at the wedding or bridal shower, and you’ll really value the posing practice it can provide. Don’t wait! Getting married in summer or fall means in late April, your wedding day is only three to six months from now! This is your last spring as an engaged couple.

Your Wedding is Next Spring

I love doing engagement photos in the same season as the wedding. It lets you have a preview of the colors and tones, it keeps the vibe on theme, and it helps you understand how it will feel to anxiously watch the weather the week of your actual day. You still get posing practice and all your images will be finished with plenty of time to use for save-the-dates or DIY invitations. It’s a win-win for sure! Don’t forget – engagement sessions are a great way to try out your wedding photographer or to see how professional makeup looks in your photos. Schedule a makeup trial on the same day for maximum impact!
